Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station has arrested a youth for allegedly duping people by sending them fake traffic challans. The accused, identified as Shobhan Santra, was picked up from Baranagar and is believed to be linked to a wider fraud racket.
The case came to light in August when a victim complained that Rs 40,000 was withdrawn from his bank account after receiving a fraudulent challan message. As the investigation progressed, police found that several other people had fallen prey to similar scams.
Officers suspect that Santra was not acting alone and that a bigger gang could be operating behind him. Efforts are on to trace his network and gather details of the fraudulent operations.
Santra was produced before the Bidhannagar Magistrate Court today, and police are seeking further custody to continue the investigation.
